The beautiful state I love and call home just closed another election cycle.

Just thought I'd post a photo of what I love.... :)

Facebook is a twitter with comments, opinions and emotional tirades. Our state was in the national spotlight over Measure 91. Yes, recreational use for marijuana and yes, the measure passed in our great state. Those who were absolutely against it are upset and those who voted for it are rejoicing. As I read through the comments in my newsfeed and added my comments I noticed how very little people really knew about the measure and the topic. I noticed how angry some Christians were and how they were reacting. Some common reactions:

1. Why vote at all!

2. Jesus is the only answer to all of this!

3. It’s all the commie, liberal hippies fault!

I would like to come around to a different conclusion. I say Christians let’s take some responsibility and learn to respond to our culture and society.
I have 2 words for us:

Educate yourself on the topic, find out what is going on in the world. This is so you can have intelligent worthy conversations with others who don’t know Jesus. I will tell you something, it is a huge “turnoff” to non-christians when we don’t know any facts. When we blurt out emotional rantings with no base in facts
we just look DUMB and IGNORANT.

Jesus is our example of this when he spoke with the woman at the well in John 4 he revealed facts to her. V. 17 Jesus said to her, “you are right when you say you have no husband. The FACT is you have had 5 husbands and the man you are living with now is not your husband.” He told her the facts, no emotional ranting  he let the Holy Spirit do the work…..In v. 29 she announces when she arrives back in town “Come see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” v. 39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony."" He told me everything I ever did."
V.41 "And because of his words many more became believers."

He knew the facts about this woman and stated them. These were the very facts that brought her and many others to a place of belief.
Yes…… he was Jesus and he had a direct line to God the Father who knows everything and as Christians living in this day and age we do have the Holy Spirit. In John 14 he is called the spirit of truth and our counselor. We also have information at our finger tips with the internet that we can easily find out the facts.

Word #2 ENGAGE

Engage people in healthy constructive conversation. Engage means “to give attention to”. Often the only time Christians pay attention to world problems is if it is directly affecting them. We take the whole “you are in this world not of this world” to the extreme and bail on everything with the attitude “it is going to hell in a handbasket anyway what can I do about it….”.
I  just think,"wow are you serious?”  Matthew 5 Jesus called us to be the salt of the earth, he called us to be the light of the world. A city on a hill, that our light may shine before all men. And the whole purpose of this is to give Glory to God.
Referring to the story in  John 4, Jesus engaged in conversation with the Samaritan woman. He asked her for a drink. It was a conversation that changed not only her life but the life of a people. She went back to her town and shared with other Samaritans what Jesus had shared with her. An entire people group came to know Jesus. If you know the history of the Samaritans they were rejected by the Jews but when Jesus deciding to engage in conversation the excluded became the included.

Today I had several worthy conversations with people about measure 91. I did my best to have  thoughtful conversations and one person although we disagreed said they enjoyed the conversation. I know that people will not always agree and I also know that sometimes no matter what someone says, a person could choose to be offended. Christians...we have opportunity.....
Let us be intelligent, thoughtful in our conversations.
Let us engage people with the intent to build relationship.
 Let us be like Jesus….
