I have been contemplating lately what faith is.
As a christian our favorite verse for faith is in Hebrews 11:1
"Faith is the confidence of things hoped for, the assurance of what we do not see"
It is the "quicky, christianese, standard"
Seems so simple right? Believing, speaking it, yet .....it is deeper,
believing in what you don't feel,
believing in what you don't hear,
believing in what you don't receive..........

How does one do that? Disappointment, financial failure, loss of relationship,
loss of health and the ultimate breaker loss of trust.

I was raised in church. Taught that God would come through on my behalf, that the people that I went to church with were my family, that heartache was not God's plan.
If I just read enough scripture, quoted enough verses, went to church enough, was in enough Bible studies, spoke enough faith statements about what I was believing for, it would happen.
And when it didn't..........what then.

As Christians we don't like to talk about that. We don't like to express that because for some reason it is looked at as "faithless, doubting God, not trusting Him" I have seen and experienced fellow Christians "looking down on others" because they didn't have enough faith. Often heard this statement, "well if they had enough faith that wouldn't have happened." Yet, the truth is we live in a world where ugly things happen. There are times when we earnestly seek God.
We think we are making the best choice, only to realize later it was an awful choice.

It was in those times of darkness I realize that I have had the greatest faith.
Times I wanted to lock myself away and wish for another day to come.
Times when I did not want to go to church.
I knew when I walked through the door
I would subject myself to thoughts that would echo in my mind..............
"What are they thinking about me? Do they see my rejection?  Do they see my failure?"
Knowing that people were talking about me,
yet they did not have the courage to have a conversation with me.
It took GREAT faith to walk through the door. It took GREAT faith to shake someone's hand. It took GREAT faith to smile. Often pretending, on the outside but hurting on the inside.
That was GREAT faith.
There are many, many people in that same place of faith.
 Faith is:
having a conversation.............. in the face of possible rejection
opening your Bible to read it....................... when you feel it is pointless
speaking up......... in the face of criticism
praying....... when your prayers feel empty
saying "yes"..........  when your head is screaming  "no"

Those are moments of GREAT faith.

They are the mustard seeds of faith.
