I am joining Lisa Jo Baker at Five Minute Friday. Bloggers write about a given word for 5 minutes. Unedited and unscripted. The word this week is "visit".

Monday of this week our family went for a visit to the big city of Portland. My dear friend Marcy is the learning center director for City Team Ministries at the Portland branch. City Team ministers to homeless people with food and shelter and also offers a program for those who want to get off the streets and receive treatment for their addictions. We thought it would be a great opportunity for our family to work at City Team for the day. As we approached the building there were men standing outside smoking their cigarettes and talking. They looked a little rough around the edges but their eyes showed light and life. They greeted us with smiles and Marcy introduced us to each one. We entered the building and as Marcy talked to us about the facility and what City Team offered she would stop and ask the men if they would like to tell us their story. Bobby, Chip, Jason and  Joe each man had a different story. A story of a life that had risen from the depths of despair to hope. We stayed for hours and listened. We stayed and lent a helping hand. As time went by and we were getting ready to leave one of our daughters said to me, "wow mom, they had a lot of stories to tell. I think I have hit overload." As I contemplated what she had said I thought, the story telling was more for them than it was for us.We became the opportunity to share what glorious things God had done for them. That their life had purpose and they could share it with us. Our visit became symbiotic. As a family we walked away blessed by them and they were blessed by us.
