So I do not have any amazing Monday savings for you. I did not even get to the grocery store this weekend in any significant way, I decided that stopping for milk does not count. I spent my Saturday with a lovely group of people that have a heart for youth. They have a desire to prevent young people from becoming entangled in the sex trafficking industry.
This is something that is so dark and unfathomable.
We don't like to read about it or even think about it.
 It turns our stomach.

We also think it doesn't happen here in the U.S.

Here are some truths that can bring it home.
1.  It is a $32 billion business, making it the second most lucrative crime in the world (after drug trafficking).

2. Trafficking does not necessarily involve transporting victims over national lines, although 800,000 victims are trafficked this way every year.

3. In the U.S., over a quarter of a million American kids fall victim to commercial sexual exploitation each year. This out numbers international victims in the U.S 11 to 1.
Average age of a victim is 12 - 14.

4.  The porn industry in America (which feeds the sex trafficking industry) is a $97 billion industry. It's revenues are larger than professional basketball, football & baseball combined.

To me that is a staggering amount. It is not just a crime overseas but it is a crime that is happening in our backyard. It is interesting because today I had a short conversation with someone about what I did on Saturday and their immediate response is, "well those kids must have a bad home life that is why they get into that." That is not entirely true. Any young person can get lured into it. I had a conversation with someone a couple of weeks ago that her 13 year old daughter had been talking to a stranger on her ipod. The person text her through an app on her ipod and she began chatting with him. He was a 16 year old boy. But the truth is who knows how old this person was. The youth had been having conversations with this "16 year old" for weeks and the parent was unaware. This is the beginnings of a youth becoming ensared.  It starts with a conversation. Then a relationship begins to develop. The person "grooms" the youth by listening to them, talking to them, telling them things they want to hear. Once the relationship is established with a base of trust they meet with that youth and kidnap them and the abuse starts. It can steal years, innocence, and future from a young person and sometimes their life.

The hopeful part of all of this is that it can be prevented. Young people can be educated on what to look for and how to report someone if they suspect someone is trying to lure them.

This curriculum is being introduced into schools in Washington to help educate young people  and hopefully it will be introduced to many more schools nationwide.
