I love the small town I grew up in.
Nestled in the foothills of the Cascade mountains in Oregon.
A town that rose up out of the dirt to house loggers and their families
and later farmers and commuters. I loved summers in my small town.
When the sun would rise
.
it was the signal for uninterrupted adventures.
Summers building forts, playing in the neighbor's creek, the neighbor boy, my sister and I spent hours digging in the old trash dump that was in our back field. Finding old tin cans, broken dolls, toy cars  and other such treasures for our forts.
Riding bikes
up and down the back roads.........
Going to visit a friend or two......

The neighbors we knew that lived down this road went to our church and we would play Cowboys and Indians with them

Or riding a mile to the corner market, (the only market)
where we would buy a 10 cent Fire Stix and a box of Red Hots to eat on the way home.

Anyone remember these?

The simplicity of childhood with no cellphones, no cable TV, no computers, our imagination ruled our minds with adventure and play. The end of the day came when the sun would begin to set. It was the gauge to know it was time to come in. The security and sameness of my mom standing on the back porch of the farmhouse calling our names until we came home.
Now I am a mom, a mom of the 21 century. A mom of cellphones, computers & social media. So I must be intentional with my girls, bake cookies, play a game, go shopping together, make dinner together. These are the things that matter. When they grow to have their own families they will remember the sameness of baking, the simplicity of cooking, the security of tradition. Much like my memories of my mom calling my name till I came home.
