I have been reading the book of John for a class that I am teaching. Last week when we were reading it in class it struck me how John was so sure of himself.  In John 1 the priests and Levites came to question who he was. It is likely he had developed quite a reputation from baptizing people and probably had quite a following of young men who had become his disciples so he would have caused quite a stir. In response to the pharisees he said "I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." I am sure the religious leaders were very puzzled about who John was speaking of. The very next day in v. 29 John saw Jesus coming toward him and said "Look the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." John goes on to say in v. 34 that "Jesus is the Son of God" . John quickly points out who Jesus is. He gives credit to Him. He states that He is the Son of God,  this is whom the Jewish people had been waiting for. They had heard of a Messiah to come for hundreds of years and now He was here. The very next day John  was with two of his disciples and again saw Jesus. He pointed out that he was "the Lamb of God" when John's disciples heard this they left John and followed Jesus. I would guess that John was expecting this. John was there specifically to point people and prepare people for Jesus. That was his purpose. He didn't react how we often react by becoming angry and pouting. Thinking "how come they like Jesus better than me?" or "wait!!!!! Those are my people! What are you doing Jesus stealing my people!" (which by the way I have heard leaders in churches call church attendees "their people", aren't they God's people? ) or yelling after the disciples that left" you are going to want to come back to me! you know I was here first. I taught you first. You can't leave me and still be blessed."
John knew exactly who he was, what he was called to. His identity was in God and what God had asked Him to do. It did not rely on what others thought, or what others did. He was unmoved and continued to  preach. May we as Christians know who we are, what we are called to do and love others enough to give them the freedom to do what God has called them to do.

"let us not love with words but with actions and in truth."
 I John 3:18
