One of the greatest teachers in my life has been "life". The circumstances I find myself in and the people that surround me. On a regular basis I look for "take aways". What can I take away from this? What can I learn?

Early in my marriage, my husband and I had a small  trailer home that we rented that was next door to our home. We rented it to a family, a single mom and her three children. The two youngest girls would come over and visit. They would knock on our door multiple times during the week ask questions. I was young and did not have my own children so I was completely annoyed by this! I would think...."don't these girls have something else to do?" The youngest would actually stand on my porch and talk at me through the screen door. She would stand there and have a complete conversation with me. Asking me questions about my day with meaningless small talk. The whole time I am thinking, "why does she always come over here?", "I really don't have time for this"," I am in the middle of something doesn't she see that I am busy?". Yes, I am ashamed to say these thoughts rolled around in my head. Once in a great while I would stop what I was doing and open the door to let her in for some short cut off conversation. Just enough to offer a token of my time so she would move on and I could get back to more important things.

This family lived next door to us for about 2 years. At some point the mom stopped paying rent and we were forced into an uncomfortable situation. We would have to ask her to leave. It was a very difficult decision. Asking a single mom with three kids to leave because they couldn't pay rent. It was a hard decision for my husband to make. He delivered the news and the mom took it very well, she said she understood. They did eventually move out which allowed us to go in and get it ready for the next renters. When we opened the door we discovered the whole house was full of trash. Animal feces, garbage everywhere. The bathtub and toilets were not functioning. It was trashed, and it was difficult to walk down the hall into the various rooms of the house. I remember being shocked. Shocked and saddened that this sweet family had been living this way right next door and I did not know. Sad that their circumstances had taken them to such a place. Even more sad in my heart that I would interpret a small girl standing at my door as bugging me instead of seeing her need. It forever changed me. The little girl with her nosed pressed against my screen door changed my life. She forced me to look at myself and to begin to see others with a heart of compassion, for this I am forever grateful.
My takeaway.....things aren't always as they appear.
.....Be Jesus. Jesus had people following him, asking things of him and he lived compassion.
"When he saw the crowds he had compassion for them". Matt 9:36, Matt 15:32
Compassion compels us to love. Love Wins.
